Preparing for your future is an interesting concept. It is never promised but if you are fortunate to have one, you need to be prepared for it. I will share a short video on FB of the grasshopper and ants fable where a grasshopper plays all through the fall while the ants work away to prepare for the winter. Winter comes and the grasshopper hasn’t stored up food and learns real quick the importance of preparing for the future. He has to beg for food from the ants to survive. Moral of the story is there is a time to work and a time to play. Habit #2: Put first things first. Work first then play!! Being present in the moment is just as important as preparing for the future. Be present. Be in the moments. Your life is a series of moments and enjoying and making the best of those moments can make for a great life. Each moment is a gift. Each year, each month, each day, each minute, each breath, each heartbeat is a gift. It is a present to be able to be present. So students be present. Be where your feet are. Be in the moment. Set the cell phone down, log out of snapchat and spend some time in person with your friends or family. We all know in-person learning is best for students and so is in-person in the moments. Look people in the eye, minimize your distractions, listen without thinking about a reply, do something nice for someone, get your chores done without being told, tell your family members you love them, help your sister or brother, read a good book, write in a journal or write a nice note to your mom or dad, just enjoy your moments. They are yours and what you do with them matters. They are free but they are also priceless. Hopefully you were truly present today. You were in the moment of a no school day instead of focusing on will Friday be the same thing? Hope we get the call. Hope we don’t. Hurry up already. Don’t want the call too late in evening. Definitely not too early in the morning. Is it going to be a delay? Is it going to be no school? When are we going to get the call? Too much focus and concern can steal your moments of being present. So, tomorrow Friday, February 4, 2022 be present in whatever you will be doing. It won’t be school though as Unioto will be closed. All games and practices are canceled for tonight. The girl's game has been rescheduled for February 10. Remember…being present in the moment helps prepare for the future. Give yourself a present by being present. Go Tanks!! https://youtu.be/1i6mbw6_2IU

Parents - Just a few things I would like to share with our students to think about and maybe put into practice. They will have some time available to at least think about a few of these things. I have some good news and bad news. We all at some point have been disrespected or have been disrespectful. We know how it feels. We know when we are doing it or when we experience it from others. You can even be disrespectful to yourself. Giving less than you should or deserve is disrespectful to your future self. You two years from now will not appreciate the you today that continued doing the things you know you shouldn’t be doing. The you that avoided doing the things you know you should be doing and could be doing. That is disrespect to yourself. Have you ever not followed through with your promises to yourself? Disrespect. Lack of discipline in your choices? Disrespect to yourself. Not giving your best effort? Disrespect. It isn’t easy. Understand, if it was easy, everyone would be disciplined and respectful to themselves and others all the time. It is not easy. However, know that in many cases, if something is not easy there is real value to be found. You don’t want it easy. Sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do or go where you don’t want to go to ultimately get where you need to get. Your toughest of challenges can be your greatest of opportunities. Physical fitness and exercising can be terribly difficult to maintain over a period of time but can you imagine how difficult it would be if you couldn’t even move? Making healthy choices with what you eat and put into your body. It matters. It can be unbelievably difficult to eat healthy every day. It is tough. It is easy to zebra cakes, candy bars and bowls of ice cream. It can be enjoyable also! Studying for your classes, getting all your homework turned in, being focused with your school work and efforts, cleaning your room, helping around the house, all of these things can be hard. Not doing these things is easy. Remember…easy has a cost. It is real work to be disciplined and respectful to yourself and others. You have to do the work. Things actually get harder if you try to make it easy. Gary Bishop said “If you don’t do the work, you will flunk the test. It is the same in life." So do yourself a favor and respect yourself and others and take some time tomorrow and think about this since Unioto will be closed due to weather conditions. Students, you will have a full day tomorrow to think about all of this and begin to put it into practice because there is no school tomorrow, Thursday, February 3, 2022. Good news is you have time to work on all of this and the bad news is - no school tomorrow! Go Tanks!!

What do you do when you have nothing to do? The great ones maximize their time. They use it wisely. They are always on the hunt for opportunities to grow, improve, and to get better. What little improvement can I make today to move the needle just a little more towards greatness? Its not actually that difficult to better yourself. I once heard a great strategy is to simply look around you…your direct sphere of influence and fix the things that announce themselves to you as in need of repair. Most of the time they are really small things. Easy but profound fixes. Easy in that its a minor adjustment a small change but the results can be magnificent. Take a moment this morning and just ask yourself what needs fixed. You will know the answers. You know what you could do, should do, and what you would actually do. You know you know. Students here is a suggestion for something to do today. If for no other reason than to impress and make your parents happy. Get your room in order. Clean it up. Organize it. Make your bed, sweep the floor, put your clothes away nice and neat. Actually fold them or make sure they are hung up. Pick up the trash and get it where you know it should be. Yes, your superintendent is telling you to clean your room. Its a bigger deal than you may realize. It's is the beginning of truly getting your act together. You get your room in order and you learn to keep it that way…guess what…then you can expand your influence and help keep the bathroom in order, and then the living room and kitchen and before you know you can help others to do the same!! Your whole house will be in order!! Through this process you will learn how to act in a manner that produces order and results. This is the same in life. You improve yourself...and you can one small improvement at a time. You truly can. I have seen it with my own eyes. You being your best is not only best for you but best for your family. You improve yourself and then you can be a positive influence for your family, your friends, your school, your community, and beyond to your greater community! All of this can happen by simply learning to clean your room!! So, start today!! Use this snow day to begin the process of being your best!! Since Unioto is closed today due to snow, you can take this day and dedicate some of it to cleaning your room. You can help me be excited for a snow day for once!! Get up and get started…Go Clean your room!!! Go Tanks!!

Another reminder we are utilizing our district website live feed, district and building Facebook, Twitter and now Instagram for all communication. Please like or follow each to have access to announcements and information. They are as follows: District Website: unioto.org - go to LIVE FEED on home page District Facebook: Union-Scioto Local School District District Twitter: Union-Scioto LSD District Instagram: unionsciotolsd Students from the great words of Mr. Feeney…which I doubt any of you are aware of. He was a teacher on a sitcom from a few years back titled Boy Meets World. He once said “If you let people's perception of you dictate your behavior you will never grow as a person, but if you leave yourself open to experience despite what others think, then you will learn and grow” It can be a real challenge to not allow what others think of you to impact you in a negative manner. I say let everyone you meet be a teacher to you. You can learn from everyone. Remember to never get too caught up in all the praise you receive and do the same with all the criticism. Both can be extremely helpful in your efforts to improve yourself. Especially with the criticism if received as a growth opportunity. All criticism is not bad. Criticism can make you better. Be open to criticism, welcome it, look for it, ask for it, desire it. It can be your biggest stepping stone to reaching your goals and potential. Surround yourself with people who will invest in you and care about you. Those that are willing to tell you what you need to hear even at the risk of losing your friendship can be invaluable to you and your future self. Steer clear of the impostors that only tell you what you want to hear. As T.D. Jakes says…real friends keep it real. Audit your circle!! I have attached a short clip of T.D. Jakes emphasizing the importance of accepting criticism. Please watch! https://fb.watch/aGueL3jAok/ Have a great weekend and remember...3 days til Monday!! Carry your own weather!! Hard work works!! Audit your circle!! Be grateful!! Go Tanks!!
