Red Ribbon Essay Contest
Congratulations to sixth grade student, Braydon Botts. Braydon, along with his classmates, participated in the Write in Red Essay Contest which is sponsored by the Paint Valley ADAMH Board. Braydon completed a 300 word essay on the topic: “How Do I Stay Drug and Alcohol Free?” Braydon’s essay was selected as the winner from Unioto Middle School. Braydon will be awarded a $100.00 cash prize and will go on to compete in the Countywide Essay Contest, with a chance of winning a $500.00 scholarship. Again, congratulations to Braydon Botts, our 2021 Write in Red Essay Contest winner!

The OSCA and Ohio Doctors of Chiropractic held a “Drug Free, Healthy Me Poster Contest.” Entries were collected and judged statewide. We are excited to announce that the grand prize winners represent Unioto Middle School. Congratulations to Ella Smith, grades 7-9 and Sophie Hanes, grades 4-6. Both students will be receiving a $250.00 gift card. The Unioto Middle School Art Program will be receiving a donation in honor of both recipients. Congratulations to both students and thank you for spreading the word about choosing a drug free lifestyle!

Exciting weekend for our cross country and soccer coaches and players. Boys cross country run at noon and girls run at 1:00pm at Fortress Obetz state meet. Our boys soccer team’s regional final vs Athens is at Zane Trace and the game time is 3:00pm. I have 3 words for our student-athletes...JOB NOT FINISHED!
No school next week on Thursday, November 11 in recognition of Veterans’ Day. School will be in session on Friday, November 12.
Congratulations to the students that show up everyday with a mindset to be better. Making good decisions. Being a leader. Influencing their friends and others to do the right thing. Leading by example. Not engaging in drama and wasteful activities. Focused on their studies and being on time and putting in the effort and energy to be the best student and person they can be. Listening to their parents and helping around the house. Being trustworthy and respectful. Congratulations for doing your best to win each day and realizing every day is a game. You have to bring it every single day. Every day. Don’t cheat yourself by being satisfied with your accomplishments. Each accomplishment is the next step up. Step up. Step up every single day. The goal is to win as many days as you can. Win the day. Every day is your championship game. You have heard me say this before and I will continue to say it...you are way more than you think. Your future you is counting on you to be super selfish with your time, selfish with your improvement efforts, selfish with who you allow in your life and who you spend your time with. Understand this is the time it is ok to be selfish. Demand yourself to be better and be loyal to yourself. Follow through with what you know you need to do. Voluntarily face your weaknesses and barriers and start where you can start. Pick one or two things you know you can improve on and things you will actually do. Actually do. And start. Small wins each day over a series of days, weeks and months. Just imagine who you could be if you truly strived towards being better. So proud of the students that are winning their days.
It is easy to be average or mediocre. Real easy actually. Just ask TD Jakes as he says If you want to be mediocre and just fit in then dress like them, walk like them, act like them, go where they go, think like they think, do what they do, and neutralize your uniqueness and you won’t need courage. It takes courage to be different, it takes courage to be successful, it takes courage to win. People don’t talk about people that don’t win. If you win they are going to talk about you. Do you have the courage? Win your small wins! Win your day.

We have another weekend of spooky boo goodness with our haunted house designed and scripted by the students of Unioto Drama Club with direction from Faculty Advisor, Frank Elliott. I will have to admit there were a few times I was scared!! Give it a try and support our drama club and choir program and students.

Would also like to mention I really really enjoy the fried bologna sandwiches our band boosters make at football games this year. It is ok to eat fried bologna if you are supporting our band program! Yummy!
Congratulations to our boys varsity cross country team for qualifying for regionals once again with another District title last weekend at Rio Grande. I believe this is 17 out of the last 19 years our boys have qualified!! Great job student-athletes and coaches. Living up to the state ranking. Fantastic! Congratulations to our girls varsity cross country team for qualifying for regionals tomorrow as well. Both teams compete tomorrow in the regionals at Pickerington North with girls running at noon and boys at 1pm!
Congratulations to our boys varsity soccer team on their advancement in the tourney winning a District championship last night against top seed Marietta! Back to back District champions!! Regional game is scheduled for Wednesday, November 3. Location and time to be announced. Great job!!! Now what??
Congratulations to the Middle school Cross Country team who competed in the OHSAA State Middle School Meet last weekend. The boys are STATE RUNNERS-UP with Jayden Beverly winning the individual state championship, Gideon Tennant joining him in the top 10 in 8th place, and Jaxon Zickafoose also earning medalist honors in 15th. Other team members who scored are: Zavier Wallace 34th , Ethan Purtee 38th Jaden Hines 41st and Caleb Caplinger in 63rd, There were 186 in the race. The girls were led by Cameron Walker in 4th place. Izzy Lawhorn finished 44th in the 140 runner field.

There’s a new scare in the air at Unioto this year. The Unioto Drama Club presents a new ghostly experience filled with spooky boo goodness. The event will open for only two weekends, October 22-23 and 29-30 from 7pm to Midnight. The haunted house was designed and scripted by the students of Unioto Drama Club with direction from Faculty Advisor, Frank Elliott. Prior to becoming a teacher, Elliott designed and built haunted house props and sets for clients nationwide as a part of his own production company. “We have a lot in store for this year’s Spooky Boo Weekends.” Said Elliott. Featured this year will be “Murdock’s Manor”, a creepy house haunted by the spirit of the late Lady Murdock and some of her less fortunate friends. Other attractions will include an escape room, carnival style games, refreshments and more. Proceeds will support future projects for the Unioto Drama Club and Choirs. Please plan to come out and support these terrific kids and prepare for some fright filled fun and fantastically fearful festivities! A reminder we will be participating in a full scale mock evacuation drill tomorrow at approximately 1:00pm. We are anticipating the drill to last approximately an hour. We will be shutting down Moundsville Rd during the evacuation drill.
I wanted to share something I read a couple of weeks ago and it keeps coming to my mind. It is titled 8 Sentences I wish I read sooner…
1. These hard times, this pain, these lessons - one day they will be your strength, your awareness, your blessings.
2. Stop expecting honesty from people who lie to themselves.
3. You will never look good trying to make someone look bad.
4. Save your explanations for those that are determined to understand you - give your silence to those that are determined to misunderstand you.
5. Your life is too short to be unhappy 5 days a week in exchange for 2 days of freedom.
6. Anything you lose when you stand up for yourself, protect your boundaries and begin to grow, was not meant to stay.
7. Don’t be upset about disrespect from people you don’t respect.
8. If you are easily provoked you are easily controlled - restraint is a superpower.

Reminder to families of third grade students: Ohio's State Tests in English Language Arts will be tomorrow (10/20) and Thursday (10/21). Please make sure your child gets a good night's rest, eats breakfast, and is at school on time.
